Serena Williams Legacy—Professional Tennis Player

The Queen of Tennis. Greatest Female Tennis Player Ever. Cultural & Sports Icon.

Women’s Tennis. Most everyone knows the names Venus Williams and Serena Williams. They’ve become synonymous with championships, hard work, and with shaking up the tennis world.

Tennis prodigy Serena Williams started playing before she entered kindergarten. When Serena and Venus first entered the professional ranks in the 1990s, being Black was uncommon in tennis. Serena quickly earned a reputation for tenacity, dominance in the game, and flashy attire. She wore her hair beautifully and naturally.

She’s now evolving away from tennis to expand on other areas of her life, leaving behind a legacy of memorable moments on the tennis court.

Sisters: Venus & Serena Williams Picture Book

Before they were famous tennis stars, Venus and Serena Williams were sisters with big dreams growing up in Compton, California. In the early mornings, they head to the tennis courts, clean up debris, and practice. They compete in their first tournament and they both win. From there, the girls’ trophy collection grows and grows. Despite adversity and health challenges, the sisters become two of the greatest tennis players of all time. This inspiring story of sisterhood, hard work, and determination is perfect for budding athletes or any young reader with a big dream.

Serena Williams, perhaps the greatest player of all time, has altered tennis history in a manner that no other player, male or female, has ever done. She has mastered every aspect of the sport and continues to compete even after becoming a mother.

Williams’ degree of domination over the competition is what stands out the most about her. Few athletes, if any, have dominated their sport as Williams has; for more than 20 years, the gap between her and the next greatest players on tour has been astonishingly wide. When she is at her best, no other player can even get close to her, much alone beat her.

After she and her sister Venus rose to fame in the late 1990s, Serena Williams dominated women’s professional tennis for two decades. She holds the most major singles victories in the modern era with 23, one less than Margaret Court’s record of 24 major victories. She won the singles championship in the 1999 U.S. Open despite being a year younger than Venus and standing three inches shorter (5’10”) than her sibling. In the early 2000s, Serena Williams overtook Venus as the top female tennis player. In 2002–2003, she achieved the “Serena Slam” by simultaneously holding the championships of the French Open, Wimbledon, U.S. Open, and Australian Open.

Venus and Serena: Serving from the Hip: 10 Rules for Living, Loving, and Winning

Venus and Serena Williams have something to say. But it isn’t all about tennis. It’s about life and how to play it. These superstars and super sisters share their secrets in this straight-talking smart guide.

Eleven by Venus Williams Wavy Short Sleeve Tee

Beginning in the late 1990s, Serena Williams became one of the world’s most talented and exciting tennis players. With her outgoing personality, unique fashion sense, and striking good looks, Williams would have commanded attention even if she hadn’t been a top-ranked professional player. But her skills on the court happen to be extraordinary, the result of years of training, natural ability, and a powerful determination to win.

Williams has gained additional attention as an African American athlete in a sport generally dominated by white players. Her 1999 singles victory at the U.S. Open made her only the second black woman ever to win a Grand Slam title; Althea Gibson (1927–2003) was the first. The Grand Slam tournaments—the Australian Open, Roland Garros (better known as the French Open), Wimbledon, and the U.S. Open—are among the game’s most visible and significant events for pros.

By Williams’s side—and often across the net—has been her older sister, Venus, an equally commanding player. Both sisters spent several years at the top of the world tennis rankings, each reaching the number-one position in 2002. As of the summer of 2004, Serena Williams had won six singles titles in Grand Slam events as well as numerous doubles titles, including a gold medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. An ambitious, multi-talented person, Williams has also, since 2002, explored acting, appearing in several television episodes and pursuing film roles as well. In addition, she has, along with her sister, studied fashion design.

Venus and Serena Williams: A Biography (2005)

The author shares the life stories of Venus and Serena Williams, who charged onto center court in professional tennis at the end of the 20th century with a force never before seen in the sport. No other women tennis players have matched their strength, their speed, or their overall athleticism, and none have achieved the status and celebrity they have gained on and off the court as they powered to the number one and two rankings in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). Venus and Serena Williams represent in many ways a shift in attitudes concerning women in sports, particularly African American women. By playing tough tennis, they conveyed to the public that it was acceptable for women to be strong, to have muscles, and to compete.

When Venus and Serena first appeared in the public eye, their hair bound in beads bespoke their ethnic pride, the braces on their teeth belied their youth, and their grit and determination enabled them to withstand challenges concerning the attitudes of these young African American women in what had traditionally been a white-washed sport. This book shares their stories, and it provides a way to consider the impact of race, gender, and culture, and the influence these have through sport in shaping popular culture. Includes a timeline and a bibliography of print and electronic sources for additional research.
