What Does Compassion and Respect Mean To You?
Interdependent relationships involve giving and accepting others: love, respect, value, nurturing, knowledge, skills, commitments, material possessions, time, and talents.
Surely, we are incapable of doing to others what we do not wish another to do unto us.
We cannot escape the fact that words matter, and people may be inspired or suffer as a result.
Candid discussions can reveal and clarify underlying barriers.
An inability to communicate leads to silent suffering and misunderstandings and conflicts going unresolved.
I’ve Learned From The Best
A word or friend, in time of need, comes from unexpected places.
I know we’re doing everything that we want to
Meanwhile, are we losing because we won’t let go…
Let’s start thinking what we’re doing
Don’t let nothing change your mind
Let’s start heading homeward bound
Get off the ground, stop losing, yeah losing…
Keep on believing all the dreams inside of you
And don’t stop achieving; Let some love shine on through… Keep Risin’ to the Top, Keni Burke
Don’t be afraid of other cultures, or of people, unlike yourselves. You will be amazed at what you have in common.
It ain’t rocket science; it should be easy to figure out.
Communication is a fundamental part of developing positive relationships.
The heart and mind retain spoken words. Be careful of the words coming out of your mouth privately and publicly, especially disgraceful insults.
Fighting and fussing, screaming and cussing
Never solved a single thing.
Come let us reason. Let’s start believing.
It’s time for us to make a change. (Love Is The Golden Rule, Gordon Mote)
Small changes can have a huge impact.
All it takes is a point of light; A ray of hope in the darkest night.
If you see what’s wrong and you try to make it right, You will be a point of light. ~Randy Travis
SHOWING Authentic Care For Others
Caring is a sustained emotional investment in someone’s well-being.
It is characterized by a desire to take actions that will benefit another person, even those with abnormalities and disabilities.
Lean On Me, Kirk Franklin, Mary J. Blige, Bono, Crystal Lewis et al.
Caring begins with being present, open to compassion, mercy, gentleness, loving-kindness, making a conscious decision to show genuine care.
We should strive to foster relationships based on learning and understanding what’s essential to the other person’s happiness, concerns, needs, and desires.
We don’t always do right, but He Still Loves Me—Beyoncé & Walter Williams, Sr. of the O’Jays (The Fighting Temptations movie)
It requires a lot of patience when someone is trying your faith.
Be slow to speak, so you don’t blurt out unkind words.
Be conscious of hurting someone’s feelings or belittling them.
“Don’t be cruel ‘cause I would never be that cruel to you.” ~Bobby Brown
YOU Can’t Turn Back Time and Make Things Right
If I could turn back time, If I could find a way
I’d take back those words that hurt you, and you’d stay
I don’t know why I did the things I did
I don’t know why I said the things I said
Pride’s like a knife; it can cut deep inside
Words are like weapons; they wound sometimes… If I Could Turn Back Time, Cher
LEGO Mickey Mouse & Minnie Mouse Buildable Characters
Iconic Disney characters become a unique display piece!
Behind those smiling faces could be jealousy, misery, and envy. Everything is not what you see.
“Smiling Faces Sometimes pretend to be your friend; smiling faces show no traces of the evil that lurks within.” The Undisputed Truth
Acknowledging Your Foolish Behavior and Disrespectful Ways
Mirror, Mirror on my wall, Tell me who is the loneliest fool of them all. Now, wait a minute, I believe I see the answer staring back at me (Mirror Mirror, Diamond Rio)
RESPECT Other People’s Rights and Freedom
Every citizen should realize that with rights, we must accept responsibilities.
We must remember that others have rights and that we must behave so that they, too, can enjoy their rights.
Invitational behaviors include: trusting, welcoming, respect, trust, optimism.
People should not characterize an entire race due to the actions of an individual or group. These are unfair representations.
Stereotypes are harmful. Get rid of stereotypical ways of thinking.
Bullying is considered a repeated physical and psychological abuse.
Expand your perspectives. Get to know and understand the diversity of people.
The most important things in life are not things; they are people.
You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like you
But, if you walk the footsteps of a stranger
You’ll learn things you never knew (Vanessa Williams, Colors of the Wind, Pocahontas Soundtrack)
Our diversity is what creates our uniqueness.
Why in the world would anybody put chains on me?
I’ve paid my dues to make it
Everybody wants me to be what they want me to be.
I’m not happy when I try to fake it! No. That’s why I’m easy.
I’m easy like Sunday morning (Easy, Lionel Richie, The Commodores)
In-Groups and Out-Groups
According to the Social Identity Theory, people are more accepting of those who are familiar and similar to themselves, but they distance themselves from those who are dissimilar and less familiar.
I’ve learned that I don’t have to like everybody, but I can learn from everyone.
I’ve learned from them all, and I respect them all regardless of our differing opinions, which is only due to our cultural upbringing and those positive/negative influences of our brothers, sisters, parents, relatives, and community.
As a young man coming up in the game
I’ve seen a lot of things
Harvest a lot of dreams
But on my road to stardom,
I’ve seen some things I didn’t understand
Like how another man could down another man
If he’s your brother, man, why don’t you give him a hand
And show him how to do it…
All we need is one love
For my sister’s and my brothers
Fathers need to help the single mothers… (One Love, New Edition)
RESPECTFUL Work Environments
Work atmospheres should consist of dignity, fair treatment, compassion, respect, non-discriminatory policies and practices, rewarding work, and equitable opportunities for advancement.
Social Inclusiveness is the principle of social equality and respect for the individual within a community that includes all characteristics of a sizable group sharing a common and distinctive racial, national, religious, linguistic, or cultural heritage.
Instead of dominating others, we can learn to live with differences.
Envy and low self-esteem can be a result of comparing oneself to higher-ranked individuals. There are discrepancies between one’s present state and one’s ideal state.
Not everyone wants to be tuned into your bad mood in the workplace. Please dial it down.
MAKE Your Home a Happy and Respectful Home
Families give us the love and the companionship that we all need.
“Loved ones are not to be taken for granted.” ~Duckie, NCIS television series
Something that can make you do wrong can make you do right
Make you come home early; Make you stay out all night long…
The power of love… You be good to me; I’ll be good to you
We’ll be together; see each other walk away with victory… Love and Happiness, Al Green
Don’t Be Selfish. Find ways to be genuinely supportive and uplifting toward one another, especially when times are tough. Keep a sense of humor.
“When somebody loves you, there’s nothing you can’t do.” ~Singer/Songwriter Alan Jackson
Husbands, too, deserve to be spoiled; told they are handsome; their efforts are appreciated, and should also be made to feel secure.
It’s so good loving somebody, and somebody loves you back, and that’s a fact! ~Teddy Pendergrass
If he is doing his best to treat you like a queen, do your best to treat him as a king. His need to feel loved and appreciated is real.
“Sometimes, I wonder, if you love me like you say you do.” ~Al Green
Baby, Baby, Baby, I Love You. Ain’t No Doubt About It, (Baby, I Love You, Aretha Franklin)
No one should feel like a hostage or be a victim of violence in their own home.
A peaceful and warm demeanor is essential to maintaining a happy and healthy home. This includes your attitude, personality, appearance, conduct, outward behavior.
“You have a pleasing personality, and that’s an ever-loving rare quality” (Beauty Is Only Skin Deep, The Temptations)
Relationships are not perfect. For some, you may need to lower your lofty expectations of an ideal fantasy woman or man.
Respect For Another Person’s Life
Why would anyone conspire to take another human being’s life?
There are so many Senseless Murders of people who had a life, children, a family, and a future.
Instinct is a valuable tool to have. Don’t get involved in road rage. Don’t bait or taunt someone into doing something that could have been avoided.
You never really know people. You never know when someone is going to snap.
Red Flags: It is vital to be conscious of what is going on with the people you are involved with. Take notice of what’s going on around you.
Husbands, wives, family members, brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts, uncles, girlfriends, boyfriends, exes, acquaintances, co-workers, childhood friends plotting against each other.
Dominating, obsessive, controlling people who may feel rejected or have no control of your life.
Scorned lovers and troublemakers are like a dark force invading your space or driving a wedge between families.
Bursts of rage, toxic situations, and more drama than reality tv.
Mental health issues, alcohol, and drug addictions, paranoia, acting strangely.
Mean, vindictive people out for revenge due to rifts and sour business relationships.
Divorces and custody battles—don’t want to share the wealth; wants sole custody of the children; don’t want to pay their fair share of child care; want their husband or wife entirely out of the picture so they can start a new life with someone else.
How Do You Explain People’s Rationality For Murder?
Many people have lost their lives simply due to another person’s opportunity to commit a crime.
In doing so, they show the ultimate form of disrespect by killing, raping, and tossing bodies out like trash.
How can a person commit this type of crime and continue to live their life without remorse or the consequences of their actions?
When caught, rather than confessing, they always have a self-serving story to tell or blame someone else for their despicable acts.
Placing blame on someone else is as old as Adam and Eve.
Show Love and RESPECT For Our Parents and Elders
Parents are the leaders of the family, and they are looked up to for the knowledge that has come to them with age and experience.
A child must have faith in the wisdom and judgment of his/her parents. “Honor thy father and thy mother.”
There is no other way children can repay parents for their love, care, and protection except through love and respect.
“Dear Mama, You are appreciated. Ain’t a woman alive that could take my mama’s place.” 2Pac
My Daddy used to tell me often, “Don’t back down. You ain’t weak. Always respect others, but don’t let them take advantage of you.”
Attend to parent’s teaching. Obey parents. Take care of your parents. Make your parents heart glad.
Mama used to say, take your time, young man…
Don’t you rush to get old
Take it in your stride
Live your life…
Now is the time for you to strive
For you to get better in what you are doing! Mama Used To Say, Junior
Individuals come to be, and then they pass away.
RESPECT For Ourselves and Our Reputation
I desire to display a proper sense of respect and enjoy the everyday blessings of loving-kindness, peace, happiness, opportunities, and prosperity.
Respect is gained by proving oneself to be capable, humble, and trustworthy.
If you disrespect everybody that you run into, how in the world do you think anybody in the world is gonna respect you? Respect Yourself, The Staple Singers
Quote from the New Edition Story: “You told me to call you when I made a decision… We got a deal… yeah, man, but it’s gotta be all of us. I can’t take it alone… I mean, a solo deal would be cool and all. If I cut my boys out, everybody in the OP would hate me… I’d hate me. I don’t know where you’re from, man; we don’t get down like that here.” Ralph Tresvant, see The New Edition Story—Full Episode, Part 1
Be True to Yourself. Don’t Be an Imitation of Someone Else.
“Let another man praise you and not your own mouth.” ~The Book of Proverbs 27:2
I don’t believe in putting up a front to be what everyone else wants me to be. That is simply a waste of my precious time.
Feeling Good, Nina Simone
“Because one believes in oneself, one doesn’t try to convince others. Because one is content with oneself, one doesn’t need others’ approval.” ~Lao Tzu
What you post online becomes public domain, and you have no privacy rights in what is put out for the whole world to see.
Therefore, you have no right to backlash when it comes to light and blows up in your face. You’ve turned your life into other people’s entertainment.
“Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.” ― C.G. Jung
Wanna Be Startin’ Something, You got to be startin’ something…
Billie Jean is always talking
When nobody else is talking
Telling lies and rubbing shoulders
So, they called her mouth a motor… Wanna Be Startin’ Something, Michael Jackson
“Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles; Lest the Lord see it, and it displeases Him, and He turns away His wrath from him.” ~The Book of Proverbs 24:17
Character and citizenship go together. One of the ways of showing good character is by being a good citizen.
To be good citizens, it is necessary to think of others besides ourselves.
There are heroes whose names we never hear; a dedicated army of quiet volunteers reaching out to feed the hungry; reaching out to save their fellow men” ~Randy Travis
THINK About What You’re Doing and Saying to Others
“Do you really want to hurt me? Do you really want to make me cry?” (Boy George, Culture Club)
Every deliberate act is done for some ultimate reason or end.
People walking around everyday, playing games, and taking scores
Trying to make other people lose their minds.
Well, be careful you don’t lose yours.
Oh, think (think) think about what you’re trying to do to me…
You need me, and I need you
Without each other, there ain’t nothing we can’t do… Think, Aretha Franklin
TEACH the Children How to Be Respectful
It is vital to have meaningful conversations with your children every day, even if it’s only 5-10 minutes.
Give them ample opportunity to do the talking. Listen attentively and respond appropriately.
Find out what is going on in their school and social life and how they feel about situations.
Children imitate the words, actions, and behaviors of the adults they spend the most time with.
What are your children hearing and seeing in your home and personal life?
The family is necessary to our way of living. The family teaches us how to take care of ourselves and how to live as good decent people.
In the family, children learn respect for authority. Children obey their parents because they realize that fathers and mothers love them and know what is best for them. ~James E. Devine
In chastising children, you should be patient and apt to teach correctness in a kind manner.
Parents should not abuse the children they have been graciously given.
No man or woman should despise their children but be an example.
Fathers and stepfathers should not be envious of their sons.
Mothers and stepmothers should not be jealous of their daughters.
“There are dreamers who are making dreams come true
Taking time to teach the children there’s nothing they can’t do.” ~Randy Travis
Wake up all the teachers time to teach a new way
Maybe then they’ll listen to what you have to say
Cause they’re the ones who’s coming up, and the world is in their hands
When you teach the children, teach them the very best you can…
I know we can do it if we all lend a hand
The only thing we have to do is put it in our mind
Surely things will work out; they do it every time (Wake Up Everybody, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes)
SHOWING RESPECT For Your Friends
I won’t be no fairweather friend; I’ll be there till the end
Even through stormy weather, time and time again (Fairweather Friend, Johnny Gill)
“Friends are those rare people who ask how we are and then wait to hear the answer.” ~Ed Cunningham
True friends don’t betray one another. They complement each other, making the other look good.
Learn how to forgive. This does not require an act of Jesus.
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it’s easy to pretend
I know you’re not a fool
Should’ve known better than to cheat a friend
And waste the chance that I’ve been given
Time can never mend the careless whispers of a good friend
To the heart and mind, ignorance is kind
There’s no comfort in the truth; pain is all you’ll find (Careless Whisper, George Michael)
Learn to forgive, and overlook petty things. I know how hard it is to do. I’ve been there many, many, many, many, many, many, many times before.
I’ve reached the age where I’ve learned a thing or two. It’ll drive you crazy if you let it.
We simply cannot live with revenge in our heads; it’ll take over your life, leaving you bitter, angry, and ugly.
STOP recruiting others into your misery. STOP harboring vengeful thoughts.
EVERYBODY Plays the Fool Sometimes
Everybody uses somebody for something.
Everybody plays the fool sometime
There’s no exception to the rule
Listen, baby, it may be factual, may be cruel,
I ain’t lying, everybody plays the fool
Falling in love is such an easy thing to do
And there’s no guarantee that the one you love is gonna love you (Everybody Plays The Fool, Cuba Gooding, Sr., The Main Ingredient)
Chain of Fools
For 5 long years, I thought you were my man
But I found out I’m just a link in your chain
You got me where you want me; I ain’t nothing but your fool
You treated me mean; you treated me cruel…
Every chain has got a weak link.
I might be weak, child, but I’ll give you strength…
Fool For You
That real, that deep, that burning
That amazing unconditional, inseparable love
That feel like forever, that always emotional but still exceptional love
Can’t nobody tell me nothing; it is what it is
And any mistake you make, I just may forgive… (Fool For You, CeeLo Green & Melanie Fiona)
OUR WORDS Can Heal or Hurt Other People
Death and life are in the power of the tongue…more specifically, your tongue.
The tongue has great power to set ablaze. It can enflame false accusations or genuine encouragement, prideful bombast or humble thanksgiving, bitter hatred, or forgiving mercy.
Let us consider our speech.
I say love, oh love, oh careless love… please tell me what have I done for you to hurt me all in fun…. Well, you know that I once was blind, but now I see… Well, you know what a big fool I have been…. (Ray Charles, Careless Love)
Do we use our tongues to build one another up in love, focusing on the gifts and virtues that another possesses, or do we use our tongues to tear one another down, focusing on the weaknesses and vices that our fellow men and women appear to have?
The present-day methods of communicating are a free field open to everyone capable of cultivating it.
RUMORS and Speculations
There go them damn rumors flying around again, destroying people’s lives. Don’t these people have better things to do than whispering like ventriloquists about things they know nothing about?
How do rumors get started
They’re started by the jealous people and
They get mad seeing something they had
And somebody else is holding…Rumors, Timex Social Club (Club Nouveau)
I, personally, am a private person. I do not discuss my personal relationship woes with family, friends, or co-workers.
I don’t know where I got this from since my family is known for calling everybody to discuss their situation and get advice before they can even make a decision on their own.
In the process, they’ve spilled their guts, then that person tells somebody else, that somebody else tells it to another, and so on.
If I were contemplating leaving my husband, for example, he’d know about it before I had a chance to make a fully thought out decision to leave.
How do you think he heard it through the grapevine? Because some bodies were busy running their mouths about somebody else’s business.
I bet you’re wondering how I knew about your plans to make me blue
With some other guy you knew before.
Between the two of us guys, you know I love you more.
It took me by surprise, I must say when I found out yesterday…
You could have told me yourself that you love someone else.
Instead, I Heard It Through The Grapevine, Marvin Gaye
