Highlights from Kamala Harris Michigan Presidential Campaigns

UPDATE: On Labor Day, Madam VP Kamala Harris returned to Detroit to attend to an event for union members and speak to supporters and voters about the stakes of this 2024 presidential election.

Becky Pringle, President of NEAToday: “I cannot imagine a better way to celebrate American workers this Labor Day than rallying with my fellow union brothers and sisters for Kamala Harris here in Detroit, Michigan. We must build on Biden’s pro-worker legacy and keep standing up for our students and the working class.”

Dana Nessel, Michigan Attorney General: “There’s nowhere I’d rather be than here in Detroit standing with working people across the state and Kamala Harris.”

The Rally had to be moved to a hangar because they had more than 50,000 requests for attendance. After changing the venue to outside due to so many people wanting to show up, Kamala Harris supporters filled the space inside and outside.

Kamala Harris addressed an issue that’s come up at home and in grocery aisles nationwide: Inflation. Prices are too high, she said. “When I was attorney general, I went after price-fixing schemes. And when I am president, it will be my day one priority to fight to bring down prices.” She said she would do so by taking on corporations over price gouging and corporate landlords raising rents.

Labor Unions Support Kamala Harris

Michigan’s place as the nation’s leader in automotive manufacturing also makes it prime battleground territory, and Harris has received keys endorsements from the United Auto Workers and other unions. Notably, Michigan has a higher proportion of union members than the national average, 12% vs. 10% nationally as of 2023, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

UAW’s international board endorsed Kamala Harris. Her running mate, Tim Walz, was widely seen as a nod to labor’s influence. The audience chanted U-A-W during his speech. Speakers referred to the importance of unions in securing benefits and middle-class wages for workers.

Shawn Fain Calls Out Donald Trump’s Lack of Support for Auto Workers, Praises Kamala Harris (Detroit Free Press, August 7, 2024). Watch the Video.

UAW President Shawn Fain delivered the longest speech to rally-goers. He spoke at length about his love for Michigan, his love for unions, his great disdain for Donald Trump, and the Biden-Harris administration’s support for the UAW. He talked about how Kamala Harris was on the picket lines with workers and stood by the million-plus current and retired UAW members during trying times in the automotive industries. At the same time, he slammed Trump at every turn.

“Kamala Harris is a champion for the working class, and like all great leaders, Kamala Harris knows it’s not all about her. It’s about the people. …But we know who we’re dealing with. Donald Trump is a scab. And his sidekick isn’t any better. JD Vance is a vulture. Every time Donald Trump gets a chance, he trashes our union, and he trashes the working class. …Well let me tell you something: Donald Trump doesn’t know shit about the auto industry, and he doesn’t give a damn about the working class.” UAW President Shawn Fain

Kamala Harris’ Opportunity Economy Plan for Small Businesses

Small businesses are the backbone of our communities. “In order to grow America’s economy, we must invest in workers, we must invest in families, we must invest in institutions and we must invest in our businesses. Our small businesses are part of the fabric and culture of our communities. Our small business leaders are not just business leaders. They are civic leaders. They are community leaders. They hire locally. They mentor. They inspire. And when we talk about the strength of our nation, all of those attributes are a part of growing our strength.
